Lettered in the corners next to the respective personifications: 'SPES/ TRIBULATIO/ INVIDIA/ TOLERANTIA'.

The central part of the design, which shows the emblem of Willibald Pirckheimer, is based on a drawing by Albrecht Dürer at the British Museum (Sl,5218.65). This print was used by Pirckheimer as a bookplate.
